US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was violently attacked after breaking into his home.

The suspect has been arrested and Paul Pelosi, 82, is being treated in hospital, said Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Ms. Pelosi.

He added: “This morning, an attacker broke into Pelosi’s home in San Francisco and carried out a violent attack on Mr. Pelosi.

“The attacker has been detained and the motive for the attack is under investigation.

“Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital where he is receiving good medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.

“The speaker and her family thank the first responders and medical professionals involved and ask for privacy at this time.”

Previously, Mr. Pelosi was convicted of drink-driving after being involved in a car crash in May.

He was jailed for five days in Napa County, California, but was only allowed to serve one night.

Mr. Pelosi owns a real estate and venture capital firm.
