The U.S. Justice Department has been investigating the unrest at the Capitol, as well as classified government documents found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and resort in Florida.

If Trump were to be indicted, it would be signed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, appointed by President Joe Biden.

You can already see the playbook — Mr. Trump has been accused and pointed to a politically motivated playbook that Democrats have cobbled together to undermine his presidential ambitions.

Experience tells us that his claims will have an audience.

Tuesday’s strong GOP performance could only give him one boost — and that, in a party reshaped in his shadow.

Trump followers — election deniers and others — were changed parties.

Even members resisting his political influence cannot ignore the core of Trump support in their ranks.

Republican candidates at the national and state levels scrambled to gain his support in the primary; he would feel they owed them.

He will be at the top of the party’s leadership race, but there are likely to be other serious candidates. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Trump’s No. 2 in the White House, Mike Pence, among others.

The challenge for all will be to round up the partisan traditionalists whose fringe elements have become mainstream.

This will be a continuation of the struggle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party – the rules of engagement are not necessarily “party first.”
