San Antonio cop fired after parking lot shooting

The San Antonio Police Department released a video recounting the incident. Warning: May be difficult to watch.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio Police Department officer has been fired following a shooting Sunday.

The department issued a press release saying probationary officer James Brennand had been with the force for seven months before the shooting. It mentions how a police officer goes on a probationary year after graduating from the police academy.

The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. near the McDonald’s on Blanco and West Avenues, north of downtown.

“In accordance with the department’s critical incident video release procedures, the department also released video of the shooting of the officer involved,” the release said.

KENS 5 previously reported that when authorities arrived at the location, a police officer recognized the man and said he fled him on Saturday night.

The SAPD narration video said the driver was identified as 17-year-old Eric Cantu. A 17-year-old woman was also in the passenger seat. Authorities found them a block away after they got out of the car,

Cantu was charged with evading detention in a vehicle and assaulting a sheriff. As of Wednesday, he was recovering in the hospital.

When we first reported the incident on Monday, police were said to have tried to detain the man, but he drove away and hit Brennand. The officer shot the fleeing suspect multiple times as he drove away, hitting him multiple times.

The streets were blocked as police investigated the crime scene.
