Madeleine, a local six-year-old, wrote a letter to the department asking for official approval to own a unicorn – if she could find one.
The department praised Madeleine’s commitment to “responsible pet ownership” in a Facebook post.
“It is always gratifying to hear that young people thoughtfully consider the request of providing animals with a loving home,” the department wrote, omitting Madeleine’s last name.
Madeleine received a “pre-approved unicorn license,” which was also attached to the Facebook post.
Of course there are conditions. The license states that Madeleine must expose her pet unicorn to “regular exposure to sunlight, moonlight and rainbows,” must feed it watermelon once a week, wipe its horns with a soft cloth “at least once a month,” and “once the unicorn Any sparkles or sequins used must be non-toxic and biodegradable to ensure the health of the unicorns.”
Since unicorns are notoriously hard to find in Los Angeles, the department took the extra step and sent Madeleine a stuffed unicorn — with a “Permanent Unicorn License” sticker on its collar.
