Grand Rapids, Mich. (AP) — A Grand Rapids-area election worker has been charged with two crimes after a witness reported that he put a USB stick in an electronic voting book in late August . 2 primary schools, authorities said on Wednesday.
The incident had no impact on the election result in the Gaines Town district, although it was “very shocking and unbelievably alarming,” said Kent County Clerk Lisa Pothermus-Lyons.
“This violates the public trust and the oath that all election workers must take,” Lyons said.
County prosecutors said James Holkerball was charged with using a computer to commit crimes and falsify records.
Holkerball could not be immediately reached for comment. It is unclear whether he has a lawyer who can respond to the allegations.
Lyons said the electronic voting books contained voter registration data, including classified information.
She said the ballot book was not connected to voting tabulation equipment or the internet.
