Billie Eilish to host Prince William’s Champion of the Earth Award in Boston | Climate News

Billie Eilish will lead the line-up for the Prince of Wales Champion of the Earth Awards.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will fly to the United States this week on a three-day trip to hold an award he founded to discover and scale up environmental solutions to repair the planet on Friday.

Eilish, who has been outspoken on climate change, will headline entertainment at the ceremony in Boston, where Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding and Beyonce Beyonce’s protégé Chloe x Halle will also be in attendance.

A royal source said: “The award has become the Prince’s annual Super Bowl moment and he looks forward to continuing to use the platform each year to showcase some of the most influential projects doing amazing things around the world to save the the future of our planet.”

Five category winners were awarded to each of the 15 finalists vying for £1 million earth prize It’s Kenya’s Clean Cookstoves Initiative and a Dutch-made bubble barrier to keep plastic out of the ocean.

and also First-time UK finalistTwo UK entries were selected.

Notpla Hard Material, a London-based startup run by Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, makes packaging from seaweed and plants as an alternative to single-use plastic.

It has produced more than 1 million biodegradable takeaway boxes for Just Eat.

Low Carbon Materials in County Durham uses non-recyclable plastic waste to make traditional concrete blocks zero carbon.

A royal source said: “Inclusion is a key part of Earthshot’s mission. This year’s nominees hail from all corners of the planet and truly showcase the best of human ingenuity. From Indigenous leadership in Australia to women-led solutions in Kenya, diverse Cultural stories and solutions are at the heart of the awards.

“Inclusivity will also be a key part of wider travel – during our time in Boston, the Prince and Princess will meet with Aboriginal leaders in Boston.”

Announcer Sir David Attenborough will narrate the show’s opening, while Oscar-winning actress and Earthshot jury member Cate Blanchett will look back at last year’s winners.

Actor Rami Malek, who played singer Freddie Mercury in the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” will present awards at MGM Hall, while Home Alone actress Catherine O’Hara and environmental activist and Activist Shailene Woodley will also present the award at MGM Hall.

“The 15 finalists for this year’s Earthshot Prize are inspiring. They have dedicated their lives to building solutions to fix the planet, and I can’t wait to honor one of the outstanding winners in 2022,” said Malik.

Lennox said: “The urgent need to protect and restore the Earth’s damaged environmental systems is critical to future survival. The goals of the Earth Contribution Award are powerful in building a world free of waste and restoring our oceans. Therefore , and I am honored to have my voice heard in support of this ambitious mission.”
