The chief executive of Barclays has been diagnosed with cancer, the bank said.
Coimbatore Sundararajan Venkatakrishnan, known as Venkat within the bank, will be treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in New York.
This is expected to last 12 to 16 weeks, during which time he will be working from home for a period of time.
In a letter, Mr Venkatakrishnan, 56, said his condition was curable and doctors said his prognosis was “very good”.
“In the interim, the company will operate as normal and I will continue to be actively involved in its management,” he wrote.
“The good news is that the problem was caught early and scans and biopsies confirmed it was very localized.”
A spokesman for the bank confirmed that the bank has not appointed any interim chief executive.
According to the NHS website, non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that develops in the lymphatic system and weakens the immune system, but most cases are considered “very treatable”.
American Mr Venkatakrishnan was appointed to the post more than a year ago Jes Staley left suddenly.
He was previously the bank’s head of global markets.
