Reforestation Efforts Along the Guadalupe River
In response to the devastating July 2025 floods that severely impacted the Guadalupe River’s ecosystem, the San Antonio Botanical Garden launched the Texas Recovery for Ecological and Environmental Stability (TREES) Initiative. This ambitious five-year project aims to restore 50,000 native trees along the riverbanks, focusing on species like bald cypress and sycamore. By collecting over 850,000 native seeds, the initiative seeks to rejuvenate the watershed’s health and prevent future erosion.
Innovative Water Management Strategies
The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) has developed a diversified water portfolio to ensure a sustainable supply amid population growth and drought conditions. This includes utilizing the Edwards Aquifer, aquifer storage and recovery, recycled water, and brackish groundwater desalination. Notably, SAWS operates a 130-mile recycled water network that conserves potable water by supplying industries and maintaining river base flows, positioning the city as an attractive location for water-intensive industries.
Green Building and Sustainable Design
San Antonio’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its architectural developments. The Henry B. González Convention Center achieved LEED Silver Certification in 2017, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and water conservation measures. Similarly, the San Antonio Zoo’s Congo Falls and The Ralston event space earned LEED Certified status in 2026, showcasing eco-friendly designs that align with the city’s environmental goals.

Confluence Park: A Model for Sustainable Design
Confluence Park serves as a prime example of sustainable, nature-based solutions for managing stormwater. Its distinctive concrete “petals” collect rainwater, channeling it into a 100,000-gallon underground cistern. This innovative system not only provides shade but also promotes smarter water use and flood resilience, serving as a prototype for future regional sustainability efforts.
